Time. When people think about textured hair care they often overlook or rather oversimplify the concept of time. In a recent article in the Harvard Crimson, a student, Lyat M. Melese spoke about how textured hair care is hard at Harvard and I can relate.Attending engineering school at Carnegie Mellon while attempting to maintain my hair was a challenge. From trying to find affordable salons to squeezing out the mere minutes of free time between my rigorous courses, extracurriculars and social life to even do my hair. Not to mention the pressure to carry myself in a certain manner while navigating the spaces of prestige and collegiate social networks. Maintaining my hair was so challenging in fact, that I damaged it so severely from neglect, forcing me essentially cut it off by my Sophomore year. I had to make a tradeoff - my confidence and agency over my appearance in the pursuit of higher education. It sounds insane when you think of it like that but it’s tragically true and not uncommon, nor is it unique to college. As we establish professional careers and balance family, work, hobbies etc. It only continues.💡Imagine a world where that tradeoff is rendered obsolete. Imagine what could be accomplished when black women are given back the gift of time. I relate a lot to this. I had a liberation last year when I simply stopped braiding my hair. It is not the braiding that is not good, it is the fact that I assumed I could not spend a month with my hair, due to the heavy workload of adult corporate life.

    If you have something negative to say about black and brown young pro’s hairstyles please move on, this post is not for you:A few days ago, one of my students asked me a great question (below) 👇🏾So to anyone wondering, here’s the answer..Depending on who you talk to, the answer to that question will differ.One camp believes short, trimmed, uniform hair is professional, and there are no exceptions. This camp associates unique hairstyles with an underlying meaning behind an individual’s work ethic or lifestyle outside work.Another camp believes that your hairstyle is not an indication of your work but rather, an expression of who you are or where you come from. In this case, what this student’s hair looks like braided is a consequence of them being born. Too many times, my black and brown students have come to me concerned about their curly hair, waves, braids, or dreads. It crushes me because I see a bright and ambitious mind ready to take on the world but still questioning how authentic they are allowed to be because of some uninformed information someone gave them.So, to my employers, Higher Ed. staff, recruiters: Give grace to minorities, and show them the decency of honoring their authentic selves. If you don’t want to hire them because of their curl pattern, accent, or whatever preference, don’t waste their time interacting with them.To students: Let your curls, braids, and dreads hang. But know and understand that people will side-eye you and judge you (ask me how I know). Ultimately, you’ll end up exactly where you need to be.I want my students to know that employment is the ultimate goal, but not at the expense of authenticity.     I’m very pleased to share the publication of my article 'The Meaning of the Mask: Ambivalent social identity and mask refusal in COVID America' in the Intellect Books journal 'Fashion, Style and Popular Culture'. The article will be published in the journal's upcoming special issue 'Dressing through Pandemics' for which I am guest editor.https://lnkd.in/edVSsiQDThe article delves into the multifaceted role of the medical face mask during the COVID pandemic through the lens of embodied dress theory. As both an accessory and a protective barrier, the face mask has evolved into a potent symbol of ambivalent social identity, reflecting the complex dynamics of who is being protected and who is perceived as 'sick.'The article explores the mask refusal movement in the United States, uncovering the deep-seated roots of this backlash. By integrating key studies on cultural memory and examining the influence of American ideals of ‘rugged individualism’ and masculine ideologies, it argues that these beliefs have significantly shaped public resistance to mask wearing. Through this analysis, the article highlights the stakes involved in personal dress choices during a global pandemic and emphasizes the importance of embodied practices in shaping public health responses. It also proposes that fashion and dress scholars take opportunities, through our understanding of embodied dress theory, to contribute to the development of public health policies rooted in solidarity and empathy, and to design masks that people will embrace willingly.I look forward to sharing this work and contributing to ongoing discussions on the intersection of #fashion, #dress, #identity, #belonging, and #publichealth.     Don't underestimate the power of appearanceOne thing that has always puzzled me as I grew up is the significance of the clothes we wear on our lives.Initially, I saw dressing up as just a routine, and the old saying "you're addressed the way you dress" didn't really resonate with me. It wasn't until I entered higher education that I began to realize the profound impact of appearance. The changes that occur when we interact with people from different backgrounds can be overwhelming, and the inability to adapt in certain situations can be quite disheartening.Imagine a lawyer in a ruffled suit and unkempt hair – quite a comical image, isn't it? It's difficult to imagine anyone taking such a person seriously in a professional setting.The power of appearance is undeniable.     Top scorer? Achieving 98.50%?All of her accomplishments seem to be disregarded because she doesn't conform to society's narrow beauty standards. Are we truly living in the 21st century? Are we really that superficial to judge someone solely on their appearance rather than their hard work?Prachi Nigam, a student who scored a remarkable 98.50% in her 10th grade exams. Yet, her dedication, commitment, and tireless efforts behind her academic success seem to go unnoticed. Instead, Prachi is being targeted and ridiculed by a majority of people. But why?The reason behind the trolling is as senseless and absurd as the trolls themselves. Who gets to decide what constitutes beauty norms? Why is it assumed that women must conform to these standards? So what if Prachi has facial hair? Does it diminish her achievements? Does it make her any less deserving of respect and recognition?It's disheartening and shallow that Prachi's hard work and academic accomplishments are overshadowed by superficial judgments about her appearance. Instead of celebrating her academic excellence, all that seems to matter to people is her facial hair.I find it appalling that no one seems to care about the effort she has put into achieving such outstanding marks. All that seems to matter to everyone is her appearance.

    Build a wardrobe that meets your body, not a body that meets your wardrobeIn my 20s and 30s, I found myself in a cycle of ill-fitting clothes and the yearning to fit back into them. It was a relentless chase after an elusive size and an ideal look.It was exhausting. It was a journey marked by the ups and downs of weight, where my confidence ebbed and flowed with the numbers on a scale and the labels in my jeans.Those years were tough and my confidence often took a huge battering based on the thoughts I was telling myself. But then in the midst of my 30's, I realised enough was enough. I decided to stop viewing my body as something to 'fix' and start celebrating it as my partner.
