  • Film remakes represent a form of cinematic translation that reconstructs various elements of the original text. This article relies on the translation strategies of domestication and foreignization to analyze “Āṣḥāb Wālā Āʿāz”, the Arabic remake of the Italian film “Perfetti Sconosciuti” or “Perfect Strangers”. This study shows that the Arabic remake, which sparked controversy across the Middle East, replicates many of the syntactic elements of the original film, such as the narrative and the plot structure, as well as cinematographic and paralinguistic elements. Still, it attempts to adopt a transformative approach in order to generate a cultural production. The result shows that the use of domestication in film remakes alters the rhetorical effect of the original version and that, although foreignization may promote an audience’s interest in foreign cultures, it may contribute to the reproduction of otherness due to the dissatisfaction of the targeted audiences.

  • 29 feb 2024 · This paper analyzes the application of domestication and foreignization strategies in the process of translating English film titles.

  • The film is a highly influential and popular audio-visual art. The title of a movie is the epitome and essence of its content. Films are both cultural arts and commercial products. An excellent film title translation plays an important role in promoting film transmission, which includes social functions such as conveying film information, showing the beauty of language and promoting box office revenue. As the continuous deepening of globalization and the prosperity of the China's film and television industry, there is an increasing number of foreign films entered the Chinese market and some influential and acclaimed Chinese films also accessed to international market. In this process, it is inevitable to involve the linguistic, cultural and aesthetic differences between the source language and the target language. Faced with the cultural differences in translation, the core issue is how to flexibly use translation strategies to have the translation of film titles to be the best. This paper analyzes the application of domestication and foreignization strategies in the process of translating English film titles, and discusses the interrelationship between these two strategies, the effects they achieved respectively and the development trend of them.

  • It is a widespread belief that transparency is a basic feature of translation. Apart from expressions denoting sameness, or equivalence there are a variety of metaphors of translation that highlight this transparency: translation is said to be a reproduction, a copy, a replica, a mirror image of the original; or, it is a transparent pane of glass through which the recipients of the target text (TT) are able to gain access to the source text (ST). The transparent pane of glass conviction emerges most strongly in expressions like "Boris Yeltsin speaks through an Interpreter" (Hermans 1996: 23) or "I've read Calvino" spoken by someone who knows no Italian (Ulrych 1997). Both these statements carry the conviction that the target language (TL) discourse matches that of the source language (SL) and it is thus accepted "as constituting the equivalent of it, as coinciding with it, as being, to all intents and purposes, identical with it" (Hermans 1996: 24) Clearly, this is an illusion since ST and TT can never be identical in any straightforward way. Translation literature is strewn with discussions related to the issue of equivalence with various authors arguing in favour of different kinds of equivalence, the most well-known being Nida (1964; Nida and Taber 1969) with his distinction between formal and functional or dynamic equivalence. More recently, historically-based perspectives on translation have opened the way to a greater relativity in approaching the whole concept of equiv...
